Patriot PCNASVK35S2 Review by Sadra

Overall a decent product. Setup was easy and he item is running very cool granted I'm using WD green HDDs. The transfer speed maxes out at 10MB/s with a 1Gbps connection which is a little disappointing but is pretty close to the max that you'll get for the money. Install the latest firmware before you do anything.

Patriot PCNASVK35S2 Review by Ray Wong

Just got my Valkyrie up and running. The unit is pretty well built. Door in the front folds down and you can access the two removable drive bays. Make sure you read the PDF manaual on the included disk before installing. It will save you a lot of hassle as the quickstart quide is near worthless. Not mentioned in either guide or manaual is the removable drive bracket has a spacer you need to remove in order to install your drives. This took me a minute to figure out. The PDF on the disk is also the only place where it lists your username, password, and default IP which you need.

Took a while to figure out how to configure windows 7 to see the valkyrie. Follow the instructions as per the pdf manaual and then in Win 7 under advanced sharing settings make sure to turn off public folder sharing, turn off password protect sharing, turn off use user account and passwords to connect to other computers. The way win 7 is set up by default does not work.

Make sure the valkyrie is using the same workgroup name as the rest of your network (done through valkyrie net tool - access via web). I had some trouble getting raid 1 configured, I finally formatted both drives at the same time through the web utility and it all of a sudden worked, where as formatting them one at a time and it did not seem to work. Not sure if this was the fix but formatting both drives at the same time certainly is faster. Just start one drive formattting and then imediately start the 2nd drive formatting. All of a sudden my raid 1 valkrie was up and running properly. I didn't try every combination but these setting worked for me.

I bought this to use as a simple, inexpensive NAS for some data at work, as RAID 1. First use will be to store rarely accessed picture files. It will not be doing iTunes, torrent, web access or anything even slightly fancy. Certainly will not be feeding video or audio files, at least not streamed live for viewing/listening. Nor will we likely be using the USB for backup or to connect a printer. Nor will we set up any automatic backup via this software; I have other software set up for backups. I did not check for new firmware.

First, as posted before, it is rather slow (we're on a 100 speed network, not gigabit). But fast enough for my purposes.

Second, as posted before, the quick install guide is useless. Actually, worse than useless, as if you follow those instructions you won't get it set up.

Third, the manual on CD is not so hot, either. For example, in the box with the instructions "Select 'Access via web' " it clearly shows pressing "Setup Wizard" and not the adjoining button, "Access via web."

What I actually did to get it working:
-Installed two 1.5TB drives. Yes, the manual says 1TB max, but it sees my 1.5TB units just fine. Removed spacers and reused screws, carefully saving spacers that I'll never use again. ;)
-Plugged in RJ-45 port to LAN; power cord to wall; held power on switch 2 or 3 seconds.
-Ran software (on my W7 32 bit PC) to find Disk Management to format. Set the time first. Remember user ID is admin, PW is root.
-Despite what the manual implies, you have to select both HDDs from "attached device" to RAID devices and both are formatted at the same time. Fairly quickly, actually. Selected RAID 1 button, of course. Also selected FAT32. It defaults to EXT2. ONLY in JBOD would you format one at a time.
-I did NOT set up users, groups, guest accounts, permissions or PWs. I just want a simple system. For now.
-I found it easy to change the name of the drive and file folders, and add new folders. All in the standard way.

Simple. Meets my needs.
